Color Combo: navy & orange

It is safe to say that I probably rock the navy + orange combo at least once a week. I was aware that I loved this dynamic duo, but it wasn’t until the other day that I really stopped and assessed that it might be my ultimate ‘comfort combo’. When in a fashion conundrum, I latch onto my old friend, navy + orange.

As I have shared in previous posts, I tend to dress on the preppier side of life, and nothing quite says preppy like a strong, clean navy paired with a colorful pop like orange. The classic grounding of a neutral like navy is enhanced by the warm, boldness of the orange. Throw in some crisp white, or calming khaki and you are good to go!

If you are looking for a way to freshen up your good ole navy pieces, I highly recommend befriending orange. You may soon find yourself rocking this classic combo on a regular basis like moi!

Drinks Anyone?

Summertime means lighter, refreshing beers. Say goodbye to your heavy stouts and wave a welcoming ‘hello’ to lighter, fruit-based brews perfect for kicking your feet up and soaking up some glorious sun.

With the weekend upon us, I thought I would share a few of my favorite summer brews in case you happen upon one during your Friday / Saturday / Sunday adventures!

Perrin Raspberry BlondePERRIN
Comstock Park, MI
4.5% ABV

This is probably my absolute favorite summer beer! It’s fun and fruity, but not too sweet. One of my favorite aspects of Perrin Raspberry Blonde is it’s crisp, refreshing finish, accompanied by a slight tartness. It pours a beautiful ruby color with a white head. Beautiful raspberry aroma. Perfect for a day at the beach, chilling by the bonfire, or just relaxing the day away with friends.

Odd-Side-Ales-logoOdd Side Ales Pineapple IPA
Grand Haven, MI
6.0% ABV

I usually steer clear of IPA’s…not my jam…but something about the intrigue of pineapple forced me to try this Pineapple IPA by Odd Side Ales and it didn’t disappoint. It’s a pretty golden yellow color with very little head. The sweetness is extremely subtle, but so is the hoppy flavor. Perhaps that is why I actually like this IPA – the hops are understated (which I perfer). Now, while I wouldn’t say this is overtly pineapple in flavor, the almost nondescript fruit taste is enjoyable. If you are looking for a summer beer that has a hit of hops and a hint of sweet, this combo might be the winner for you (especially if you are an IPA-phobic like me).

Arbor Brewing Strawberry Blondearbor-brewing-logo
Ann Arbor, MI
7.7% ABV

Now, I know what you are thinking…this is probably similar to the Perrin Raspberry Blonde reviewed above. False. In fact, I don’t think they are similar at all. Oddly enough, I like Arbor Brewing Strawberry Blonde because (oddly enough) it actually doesn’t taste like strawberry (at all). It pours almost a deep amber / pinkish color and really isn’t very fruity at all. This one, actually, is rather hard to describe. If you are looking for a true ‘fruit beer’ this isn’t it. I really can’t put my finger on why I like it, but I do. It is almost like a slightly sweet wheat beer. Guess you will have to give it a taste test and try it out for yourself!

Short’s Soft ParadeTV Logo with apostrophe
Bellaire, MI
7.5% ABV

Ah..Short’s Soft Parade. One of my standard “go-to” beers. In fact, if I am at a bar or restaurant and the beer selection is slightly overwhelming, this will be my sure-fire order every time. Short’s Soft Parade is a fruit infused rye ale – but the best part is that there are multiple fruits celebrated in this brew:  strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. Because of all of the fruit awesomeness, I would argue that it smells more like a wine than a beer. It pours a dark red, almost pomegranate color and is really stunning in a glass. It isn’t a heavy beer, but it does pack a big punch with the alcohol content. If you are more of a wine drinker, I highly recommend giving this brew a try in the future.

Shades Upgrade

I love new sunglasses. They are a fun and simple way to switch up your accessories, especially during the summer.

Aviators, Wayfarers, Square, Cat Eye, Oversized, Sport, Club Master, Round, Pilot, Butterfly, etc… The list goes on and on!

Whatever shape / style you choose to rock on a sunny day, remember that while your shades may be stylish, they are also imperative to maintaining good eye health. Sunglasses protect the eye from painful sunburns (yes, in your eyes), and may help slow down cataracts and macular degeneration. Also, did you know that the skin around the eyes, including your eyelids, is one of the areas most prone to cancer!?

Reasons to Wear Sunglasses
Source: American Optometric Association

1.) UV Protection. The sun’s UV radiation can cause cataracts; benign growths on the eye’s surface; and photokeratitis, sometimes called snow blindness, which is a temporary but painful sunburn of the eye’s surface. Wide-brimmed hats and caps can block about 50 percent of UV radiation from the eyes but optometrists say that is not enough protection.

2.) Blue-Light Protection. Long-term exposure to the blue and violet portion of the solar spectrum has been implicated as a risk factor for macular degeneration, especially for individuals that are “sun sensitive.”

3.) Comfortable vision. The sun’s brightness and glare interferes with comfortable vision and the ability to see clearly by causing people to squint and the eyes to water.

4.) Dark adaptation. Spending just two or three hours in bright sunlight can hamper the eyes’ ability to adapt quickly to nighttime or indoor light levels. This can make driving at night after spending a day in the sun more hazardous.

5.) Skin Cancer. Cancer of the eyelids and skin around the eyes is more common than people think. People should wear sunglasses outdoors whether they are working, driving, participating in sports, taking a walk, running errands or doing anything in the sun.

So, now that you know sunglasses are A MUST, it’s time to pick out a new favorite pair!

Dapper Dads from C. Wonder

Father’s Day is coming up in a few weeks, which means it is time to shop! C. Wonder has a quirky collection of treasures that might just suit your one-of-a-kind-cool dad.

Here are some of my favorites:

And, of course…the best for last!

Seychelles Shoes

So…when I heard about the big Birkenstock come-back, I was skeptical. (If you don’t know, apparently Birkenstocks are ‘the comeback sandal’ this summer…literally, they are everywhere. in cute metallics, too!)

I thought about pulling the trigger and investing in some Birks (allowing time travel back to my sixth grade self), but I just couldn’t do it. I think they look nice on some people, especially some of the newer colors being offered now, but for some reason I really hate how they appear while looking down at my feet. Couldn’t do it.

What I figured out I DID want, was a ‘footbed’ sandal — Definition: The footbed is the inside part of the shoe that runs under the bottom of the foot. A footbed is also sometimes referred to as the insole, inner sole or innersole.

Birkenstocks, for example, are footbed sandals because your foot is actually housed in a bed, not just on top of a surface like a slip flop. There is a cozy foot ‘cave’.

sofaraw9s12Looking for a sandal that was cuter than a Birkenstock, but still had the feature of a footbed, I found myself drooling over Seychelles ‘So Far Away’ sandal.

Something about the shape was ultimately more flattering than the Birks and I really loved the buckle detail. Cute.

I ordered a pair in a simple neutral color (Vacchetta) and have been extremely happy with the purchase!

The sandals are made in Italy and are beautifully constructed. I can already tell that they are made with care and will be quite durable. Because it is real leather, I haven’t experienced any ‘cutting’ into my foot as I wear them in. Instead, the leather bends naturally and wears even better over time.

If you are looking for a similar sandal, but prefer one with a toe spacer (like a flip flop but with a footbed), check out Seychelles ‘Calm Down’. Also adorable, durable and a great addition to your summer footwear! (I have my eye on that gold pair…time to save those pennies!)

Glam Earrings

I know that statement necklaces have been all the rage (I have obviously featured many of them on the blog and continue to swoon over them), BUT…I have also recently fallen in love with what I refer to as ‘glam earrings’.

‘Glam earrings’ are slightly on the larger side, jam-packed with bling, and are totally a statement of their own. (Translation: do not pair glam earrings with a statement necklace…it’s too much…far too much.)

The trick with rocking ‘glam earrings’ in a chic way is to have them be a surprising part of your outfit. For example: simple skinny jeans or black cigarette pants, white v-neck t-shirt, simple black/navy blazer, great pair of summer heels….BOOM – glam earrings. It is a kind of understated chic. No necklace, just the BLAM…pop of a bling earring.

Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray

Do you ever feel like your skin could use a “little something” at about 2:30 pm? I typically free pretty good about my make-up after freshly applying it in the morning; however, afternoon rolls around and I feel like my skin is looking for moisture and, therefore, starts sucking my make-up dry. Not a good look.

After doing a little research, I decided to give Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray a try for some added afternoon hydration.

Many of the reviews made claims like:s762518-main-Lhero

  • Makes my skin look healthy and dewey
  • Face revival!
  • Refreshes my make-up
  • Moisturizing with a pleasant scent
  • Doesn’t affect your make-up
  • Life-saver

Pretty great, right?! So far, I will say that I have enjoyed the refreshing feeling of the spray. I brought it into work and just leave it at my desk during the week for an afternoon pick-me-up.

I will say it certainly absorbs quickly and I can tell that it is oil-free. It is cooling and very moisturizing, especially when coming in from being in the sun.

I am looking forward to seeing how it wears this summer!

How To Use:

  • Hold 10-12″ from face. Close eyes and spray a light mist.
  • Use in addition to daily moisturizer, under or over makeup, whenever skin feels thirsty.
  • Avoid spraying into eyes.
  • For all skin types.
